What I Learned in Evolve Leadership
Earlier this semester, student Marcus Lindenburg shared a piece in College News Highlights about his initial impressions of the Evolve Leadership Development Program and invited students to join. Nearly two months later, having completed all six sessions, Lindenburg shares what he learned in the program.
This semester, I鈥檝e had the opportunity to work with a group of incredibly talented students every Tuesday. We talked about our strengths, what we have to learn, and heard about ways to get involved on campus. A program designed to create strong leaders, it鈥檚 something I looked forward to every week.
The program, Evolve, was created by Amanda Metzger, director of the Office of Student Engagement and Inclusion, who loves nothing more than to see others flourish. Metzger said that she developed Evolve, 鈥渢o provide St. John Fisher College students with an opportunity to grow their leadership skills from a strengths-based approach.鈥� Although motivated by the goals of the Division of Student Affairs, this was a personal passion of Metzger鈥檚 and she created both the content and curriculum for the program.
My peers shared that they learned how to see their strengths in a positive light, how to address an audience, how to improve on the talents that they already possess, and how all of these things relate to their daily life.
This semester may be ending, but there鈥檚 still time to reach out to Metzger and show your interest in future sessions. You may be surprised at what you learn. In addition to leadership lessons, you鈥檒l see it鈥檚 a place to make connections and become comfortable in a new environment.
