September is a great time for students to take the next step in their career development, and our Fall Career Fair on September 24th is the perfect place to start. Open to all class years and majors, the fair offers opportunities to explore careers, meet employers, build professional connections, discover internships, and pursue full-time positions.
Challenge your student to do these 3 things before the fair (one maybe just one):
Update Their Résumé
They don't need to wait until they're actively applying for a job or internship. Encourage your student to add summer employment, internships, volunteer experiences, campus involvement, projects, and new skills and then stop by Career Services for feedback during our designated Walk-In Résumé Review times.
Research the Employers Attending
Rather than trying to talk with every organization at the fair, students can identify a few employers they want to learn more about ahead of time. Knowing a little about an organization makes it much easier to start a conversation and ask thoughtful questions. They can find the employers listed in Handshake when they register to attend the Career Fair!
Practice Their Introduction
A simple introduction can go a long way: "Hi, I'm Taylor. I'm a sophomore studying marketing, and I'm interested in learning more about internship opportunities with your organization." Practicing a few times beforehand can make approaching that first employer much less intimidating.
We're also excited to introduce our new Career Closet, designed to help students access professional clothing for career fairs, interviews, networking events, internships, and other professional opportunities. We know that figuring out what to wear can sometimes add another layer of stress to an already unfamiliar experience. The Career Closet helps remove that barrier and gives students another resource to help them feel comfortable and confident when making that important first impression.
Parents and families can play an important role by encouraging students to show up even if they don't feel completely ready. Students don't need to know exactly what they want to do, have the perfect résumé, or be ready to accept a job offer to benefit from the Career Fair. Sometimes the most valuable outcome is simply having that first conversation with an employer, discovering a career they hadn't considered, or realizing, "That wasn't nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be."
